Nagomi Welfare Facilities

Nagomi

Nagomi is a welfare facility designed for the employees of a factory in the suburbs of Miyagi prefecture, Japan. The name Nagomi means to ease the mind in Japanese. The two-floor building covers 1691 square meters and holds a cafeteria, a fitness center, a gallery, relaxation areas and indoor and outdoor event spaces. A curved form and a sloping roof shelter the approach from winter wind and snow. Trussed wings give the cafeteria a wide open space, where the lines of the wooden ceiling are set in a random pattern to create a light and warm interior.

Nagomi Welfare Facilities by Yuji Iida was selected as an innovative example of architectural design by the A' Design Awards. Nagomi Welfare Facilities earned the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2022. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is a highly prestigious international design prize which rewards exceptional design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
