Fold and Rescue Paper Folding Lifeboat

Fold and Rescue

Fold and Rescue is a foldable lifeboat designed for use on ships. The design responds to the limited storage space on board, which restricts the number of lifeboats that can be carried. The folding structure is inspired by the origami boat and allows the lifeboat to be stored in a compact form. The structure is simple and is composed of nine thickened buoyancy boards joined by soft links made of reflective materials. Operation is completed in one step by unfastening the three straps in turn. A positioning lock fixes the opening angle.

Fold and Rescue Paper Folding Lifeboat by Yining Chen was identified as a creative illustration of industrial design by the A' Design Award. Fold and Rescue Paper Folding Lifeboat was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design in 2022. The A' Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design Award is a highly prestigious international design prize which rewards excellent design of cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, buses, trains, ships, aircrafts and more.
