Timber and Table
Timber and Table is a restaurant created through the adaptive reuse of a vernacular courtyard house in Zhejiang, China. Original timber beams, brick walls, tiled roofs and worn thresholds were retained and restored with traditional craft techniques. Concealed steel supports and modern building systems were added to meet current safety and service needs. A transitional space and a staircase connect the front and rear volumes. The central courtyard was reimagined as a reflecting pool with koi fish, offering a quiet pause for guests.
Timber and Table Restaurant by Luxi Chen was identified as an exceptional illustration of service design by the A' Design Awards. Timber and Table Restaurant was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design in 2025. The A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design competition that rewards outstanding design of hotels, restaurants, resorts, cafes, bars, cruise ships, theme parks, travel experiences and more.
