Otsuchi Table Light

Otsuchi

Otsuchi is a table lamp made from deer leather sourced in Otsuchi, Iwate, Japan. The town was struck by the tsunami caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Local crops were later damaged as the number of deer increased and the number of residents declined. Local hunters began a game meat business to make use of deer hunted as pests. The lamp is built from a 3D printed structure covered with deer leather, and the texture recalls the form of a living animal. The design honors the life of the deer and offers a calm presence.

Otsuchi Table Light by Yuto Yamada has been identified as an exceptional example of industrial design by the A' Design Awards. Otsuchi Table Light won the Silver A' Design Award in Lighting Products and Fixtures Design in 2026. The A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design recognition program which honors exceptional design of chandeliers, pendant lights, wall sconces, table lamps, floor lamps, outdoor lights, recessed lights, track lights and more.
