Black Star
Black Star is a decorative vessel handcrafted from alder wood. The design transforms a wood species with little grain or colour into an object that is pleasing to the eye and interesting to touch. The outer form is shaped by woodturning, and the inside is hollowed with bent tools. Many small holes are then drilled by hand and formed into cones, and an orange stain is applied inside them. A pyrographic pen adds small star motifs. The surface is finally charred black, which creates a soft, warm touch and strong contrast. The vessel measures 220 by 220 by 180 millimetres.
Black Star Vessel by Klaus Kirchner was selected as a creative representation of communication design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Black Star Vessel won the Silver A' Design Award in Fine Arts and Art Installation Design in 2020. The A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award is a juried, academic and highly prestigious design accolade which recognizes excellent design of sculptures, paintings, installations, photographs, drawings, mixed media works, ceramics, art objects, craftworks and more.
