House for Parents
House for Parents is a residence on Amami-Oshima Island, an area with a severe subtropical climate and frequent typhoons. A large rectangular roof is supported by a steel framework structure with a four meter span. The roof creates a cool and shaded interior, similar to the space under large trees. The concrete walls stand independently from the roof structure, so the floor plan is free from restrictions caused by columns. Projecting concrete walls extend the common areas outward toward the surrounding island landscape.
House for Parents Residence by Masakatsu Matsuyama was selected as a grand illustration of architectural design by the A' Design Awards. House for Parents Residence was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2020. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design award that celebrates excellent design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
