Pool
Pool is an interactive book cover created for a science publication. The design reinterprets the shape of algae through Chinese characters, and many algae forms are placed across the cover so readers connect with the topic at once. Doodles of different algae types are coated with spot varnish, which creates a watery reflection and a realistic texture. The doodles extend across the whole cover to form the image of a pond full of algae. Neon yellow and greenish tones show the variety of algae. A small matching quiz on the inner cover lets readers learn the names of algae.
Pool Interactive Cover by Liao Jin-Zhi has been highlighted as a grand representation of communication design by the A' Design Award. Pool Interactive Cover was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in Print and Published Media Design in 2022. The A' Print and Published Media Design Award is a juried, academic and highly prestigious design recognition program which recognizes outstanding design of brochures, posters, magazines, catalogs, flyers, business cards, billboards, books and more.
